The NIH Distinguished Clinical Teacher's Award is the highest honor bestowed collectively on an NIH senior clinician, staff clinician or tenure-track/tenured clinical investigator by the NIH Clinical Fellows. The award recognizes an individual for: (1) excellence in mentoring healthcare professionals, (2) excellence in teaching on issues related to direct patient care, and (3) outstanding contributions to the advancement of clinical research.

Each year since 1985, a NIH senior clinical investigator, who has demonstrated excellence in clinical training involving direct patient care, is publicly recognized by FelCom at a Clinical Center Grand Rounds. The committee is in charge of

  1. soliciting nominations for this "Distinguished Clinical Teacher" from clinical fellows,
    2. and
  2. compiling and "grading" the nominations based on documented teaching, documented mentoring, and overall quality of the letter of nomination.

Last year, we invited all nominated clinical teachers to the Grand Rounds and presented certificates to the runner-ups and a plaque to the winner. We also arranged for Dr. Gottesman and Dr. Galin to be present when we presented the award.
